President Donald Trump announced early Friday that a suspect has been arrested in the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Speaking on Fox & Friends, Trump said, “I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” adding that someone close to the suspect, through a minister involved with law enforcement, turned him in. Trump expressed hope the suspect would be found guilty and receive the death penalty, calling Kirk “the finest person” who did not deserve such a fate.
Authorities believe the suspect fired a single shot from an elevated position about 200 yards away from the tent where Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University’s Losee Center. Initial reports described the suspect as wearing jeans, a black shirt, and a black vest, and positioned on a rooftop east of the school’s library, armed with a long rifle.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a father of two, was shot while answering a question during his “American Comeback Tour.” Video footage shows Kirk grabbing his neck in pain after the gunshot, causing panic among attendees. Trump said he avoided watching the graphic videos, not wanting to remember Kirk in that way.
The manhunt involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Orem Police, Utah Department of Public Safety, and Utah Valley University Police. Earlier, a different person of interest was questioned and released. The FBI also set up a tip line and offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture.
Trump mourned Kirk as “legendary” and a “martyr for truth and freedom,” calling the assassination a “dark moment for America.” Kirk leaves behind his wife, former Miss Arizona Erika Frantzve, and their two young children.
