An Earthquake Has Shook The North And South Islands Of New Zealand

The earthquake, at a depth of 9km, affected over 1,200 people, with reports coming from as far north as Palmerston North and as far south as Rakaia. Residents in Karori, Te Aro, Witherlea, Redwoodtown, and Blenheim also felt the shakes.

This earthquake follows a magnitude 5.8 tremor in western Indonesia on February 7, located 620 kilometers off Sumatra. Earlier in January, Western Australia also experienced two smaller earthquakes, including a 2.9-magnitude quake in the Pilbara region and a 2.8 magnitude tremor off the coast, impacting Marble Bar with aftershocks.
