An Illinois state senator’s home was among two residences struck by gunfire early Tuesday morning in Chicago’s northwest suburbs. State Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel, a Democrat representing Shorewood, confirmed in a Facebook post that her home was hit by gunfire but that she and her family were unharmed.
“In the early hours of Tuesday morning, my family and I experienced a deeply troubling incident when a shot was fired directly at our home,” Cappel wrote. She expressed gratitude to local law enforcement and added, “Violence is never the answer.”
Police first responded to reports of gunfire near Ca Crest Drive and Highland Drive around 5 a.m., but officers found no immediate evidence of a shooting or visible damage. Approximately two hours later, officers were called to Cappel’s home, where three bullet holes from a small-caliber firearm were discovered. No one inside the residence was injured.
Roughly half a mile away, a second home was also found to have been hit by a single bullet. Investigators determined both shootings were carried out using the same weapon, though the two homeowners have no known connection. Authorities quickly identified a suspect and a vehicle believed to be involved. The suspect was taken into custody and is awaiting formal charges.
Although a motive has not yet been disclosed, investigators informed Cappel that the shootings do not appear to be politically motivated. The incident echoes a recent high-profile case in Minnesota, where Vance Boelter was charged with the murder of state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted murder of State Sen. John Hoffman.
