Ocasio-Cortez Disparages Charlie Kirk Ahead of Vote to Memorialize Him

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took the House floor on Friday ahead of a vote to memorialize slain conservative leader Charlie Kirk, using the moment to attack his character and falsely claim he was anti-Semitic. She suggested that voting “yes” on the resolution was akin to supporting the “Jim Crow” era of segregation and bigotry.

“The majority proceeded with a resolution that brings great pain to the millions of Americans who endured segregation, Jim Crow, and the legacy of bigotry,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She accused Kirk of opposing the Civil Rights Act and claimed he defended the attacker of Paul Pelosi. She also alleged Kirk accused Jews of controlling colleges, nonprofits, movies, and Hollywood. “His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated, and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans,” she added.

Kirk was assassinated last week at Utah Valley University. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, 22, faces seven charges and could face the death penalty if convicted. Ahead of Kirk’s memorial service, the House and Senate passed a resolution declaring a “National Day of Remembrance” for Kirk. However, many Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, declined to support the House resolution.

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating Oct. 14, Kirk’s birthday, as a day of remembrance. Sen. Rick Scott praised Kirk’s commitment to civic education and public service. House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House would soon honor Kirk and condemn political violence.

Robinson told police he acted because Kirk “spreads too much hate.”
