House Speaker Mike Johnson is backing former President Donald Trump’s proposal to hold a presidential-style Republican National Convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Johnson revealed during a Fox News interview that Trump called him directly with the idea, which is designed to energize the Republican base and build enthusiasm for the GOP heading into a critical election year. Johnson called the proposed event a “great rallying point” and said it would help highlight the party’s accomplishments since the 2024 election.

Trump introduced the idea in a Truth Social post, praising the GOP’s momentum and financial strength as key indicators of the party’s rising influence. He described Republicans as “fixing” the damage done by the Biden administration and said a national convention ahead of the midterms would be unlike anything done before. Trump suggested that the unprecedented timing could give Republicans a powerful platform to unify and strategize.

In response, Johnson voiced his full support on social media, posting on X, “YES, Mr. President! Let’s go!!!!” with several American flag emojis. He emphasized that the party just needs to select the right location for the event and reiterated that he’s “all for it,” seeing it as a major boost in the run-up to November 2026.

The idea comes as the Republican Party experiences notable gains in voter registration. A New York Times analysis of registration data found that, between 2020 and 2024, Republicans added 2.4 million voters, while Democrats lost 2.1 million. This 4.5 million-voter swing has occurred across nearly every state that tracks party affiliation.

Experts see this trend as part of a larger political shift, with the GOP expanding its base among younger voters, Latinos, and working-class Americans. Trump’s continued influence and grassroots appeal are widely credited with fueling this momentum, potentially reshaping the electoral landscape ahead of the 2026 midterms.
