Jimmy Kimmel Returns to ABC After Suspension Over Charlie Kirk Remarks
Jimmy Kimmel returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night, a week after ABC suspended him for controversial comments about the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Though Kimmel addressed the controversy during his monologue, he stopped short of offering a direct apology for his remarks.
During the show, Kimmel emotionally referenced Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, who publicly forgave her husband’s alleged killer. “That is an example we should follow,” Kimmel told the audience, describing her forgiveness as a “selfless act of grace” that deeply moved him.
Kimmel was suspended after a September 15 monologue where he said conservative commentators were “desperately” trying to portray the alleged shooter as not being affiliated with the MAGA movement. His remarks were met with backlash from media affiliates and conservative figures.
Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group — together representing about 25% of ABC affiliates — announced they would no longer air Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the controversy. FCC Chair Brendan Carr also issued a subtle warning in response to Kimmel’s remarks, adding pressure on the network.
Kimmel later clarified that his comments were not meant to mock the tragedy or blame any political group. “It was a sick person who believed violence was a solution — and it isn’t ever,” he said. He expressed gratitude to ABC for supporting his voice but admitted he was “not happy” about being taken off the air. He vowed to keep using his platform for issues he believes in.
