Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing Attempted to Retrieve Weapon After Shooting, Police Say
Tyler Robinson, 22, is accused of fatally shooting Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University (UVU) earlier this month. According to Utah law enforcement sources, Robinson returned to the scene after the Sept. 10 shooting, where he made contact with a police officer near the wooded area where the alleged murder weapon — a Mauser .30-06 rifle wrapped in a towel — was later found.
Beau Mason, Utah’s Public Safety Commissioner, confirmed that Robinson’s attempt to retrieve the rifle was thwarted by the officer’s presence during the lockdown. Authorities say the sniper-style shooting occurred while Kirk was speaking at a TPUSA event on campus, triggering an immediate and widespread campus security response.
Investigators have tracked Robinson’s movements following the incident to multiple local businesses and public areas. According to court documents, he was also in contact with his roommate and romantic partner, Lance Twiggs, via text. Robinson reportedly left a note that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.” Twiggs is cooperating with the investigation.
Text messages between Robinson and Twiggs reveal that Robinson admitted to the killing and expressed regret. He indicated that he planned to retrieve the weapon but was blocked by police presence near the drop point. He also mentioned concerns about not returning his grandfather’s rifle.
Robinson surrendered peacefully in his hometown in Washington County about 33 hours after the killing. According to reports, his parents and a family friend convinced him to turn himself in rather than take his own life.
