Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed over the weekend that Hamas has accepted President Donald Trump’s peace framework for Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages. Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Rubio clarified that Hamas had agreed to the full structure of Trump’s 20-point proposal, which includes the release of all 48 hostages—20 alive and 28 deceased.
Rubio emphasized that while Hamas has accepted the framework, logistical negotiations are still ongoing. These talks focus on the specifics of the release, including who will carry it out, the timing, and how the process will be coordinated. He highlighted that the successful completion of this phase is critical to moving forward with broader plans for peace.
Addressing the future governance of Gaza, Rubio stated clearly that Hamas cannot remain in control. He described this as a key component of lasting peace in the region, arguing that a terrorist organization cannot be allowed to rule. “Ultimately, permanent peace depends on Gaza no longer being ruled by a terrorist organization,” he said.
When asked about the controversial nature of exchanging terrorists for hostages, Rubio acknowledged the difficult nature of such deals. He pointed out that while the exchange may appear unfair or unbalanced, it reflects the high value Israel places on every life. “As unfair as a deal like that may be, that’s how important life is to them,” he explained.
Rubio also turned his attention to Venezuela, where he criticized Nicolás Maduro’s regime and recent local elections. He reaffirmed U.S. support for democratic change in the country and cited Trump’s directive to target Venezuelan drug-smuggling operations as part of efforts to combat international terrorism and narcotics trafficking.
