Schumer Under Fire for Shutdown Remarks Amid Growing Crisis
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–NY) is facing bipartisan criticism after reportedly saying the ongoing federal government shutdown is “getting better for us every day.” The comment, first reported by Punchbowl News, came during a private meeting with Senate Democrats and has since drawn outrage from Republicans and the White House.
The shutdown, now in its tenth day, began after negotiations collapsed over Democratic efforts to restore health care funding for undocumented immigrants. Republicans have strongly opposed the measure, calling it reckless and unfair to taxpayers. Schumer’s remark has been interpreted by critics as celebrating political gains while Americans suffer the consequences.
Tensions escalated further when Schumer took to the Senate floor and accused House Speaker Mike Johnson (R–LA) of “killing his own constituents” by refusing to accept Democratic terms to reopen the government. Johnson, in turn, has accused Democrats of playing politics with essential services and demanding excessive spending.
The White House, led by President Donald Trump, quickly condemned Schumer’s comments. Deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson called them “disgusting and revealing,” pointing to the shutdown’s impact on workers, military families, and small businesses. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the criticism, accusing Schumer of “bragging” while Americans face real hardship.
Meanwhile, the economic cost of the shutdown continues to rise, with estimates reaching $2 billion per week. Internally, Schumer is also facing pressure within his own party, as speculation grows that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may challenge him in 2026. Talks are set to resume Friday, but no resolution is in sight.
