In a rare show of bipartisanship, Hillary Clinton praised former President Donald Trump for his administration’s role in brokering a peace deal in Gaza. Speaking to CBS News 24/7, Clinton acknowledged Trump’s efforts, along with regional Arab leaders, in advancing a 20-point peace plan aimed at resolving the two-year conflict in Gaza. “I really commend President Trump and his administration,” she said, highlighting their success in moving forward on what she called “the day after.”
The agreement, accepted by Hamas, includes the release of 48 Israeli hostages and a phased Israeli withdrawal. It also outlines the disarmament of Hamas and the formation of a transitional international coalition to govern Gaza. While the plan references the creation of an independent Palestinian state, the specific terms for that goal remain undefined.
Clinton, a long-time advocate for a two-state solution, urged the international community to hold all parties accountable for adhering to the deal. She also credited Trump for bringing Israel back to the negotiating table after Israeli strikes during stalled peace talks in Qatar. According to Clinton, that move created an opening for renewed diplomacy involving key regional players, including Qatar.
Other Democrats have offered more restrained recognition. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan acknowledged Trump’s role in ending the war, albeit reluctantly. Former President Obama also praised the peace deal in a public statement, though he notably did not mention Trump’s involvement.
In a separate political development, newly declassified intelligence documents reportedly show that Russian interference had minimal effect on the 2016 U.S. election. Additionally, reports allege coordination between the Obama administration and Clinton’s campaign to link Trump to Russia, potentially reigniting controversy over the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.
