President Donald Trump made lighthearted remarks aboard Air Force One following the announcement of the historic Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, joking to reporters that he doesn’t believe anything he’s done will “get [him] in heaven,” despite brokering a deal that secured the release of all 20 remaining Israeli hostages.
Speaking with Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy—who referenced Trump’s earlier comments about ending the Russia-Ukraine war possibly improving his chances of reaching heaven—Trump quipped, “I don’t think there’s anything gonna get me in heaven. I really don’t.” Laughing, he added, “I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One… but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”
The ceasefire marked the end of over two years of conflict, following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed 1,300 Israelis and resulted in over 250 hostages being taken. The final 20 hostages were released over the weekend, all walking unaided to Red Cross vehicles. Trump declared to reporters, “The war is over,” expressing optimism that the peace deal would hold.
Trump also repeated his belief that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would not have occurred if he had won the 2020 election. He praised the rare simultaneous celebrations in both Israel and Muslim countries, calling the moment “very special” and “something that’s never happened before.”
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Trump the “greatest friend” Israel has ever had and awarded him the Israel Prize, the nation’s highest honor, citing his support for military operations and his stance on Israel at the United Nations.
