President Donald Trump refused to take a question from an ABC News reporter at a White House event Tuesday, denouncing the network as “fake news” in response to a recent interview between ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos and Vice President JD Vance. During a joint press event with Argentine President Javier Milei, Trump said, “After what you did with Stephanopoulos and the vice president of the United States, I don’t take questions from ABC fake news.” He then called on another reporter instead.
The incident followed a contentious exchange on ABC’s This Week, where Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Vance about an alleged $50,000 bribe involving former Border Czar Tom Homan. The report, initially from MSNBC, alleged FBI audio captured Homan accepting cash from undercover agents posing as business executives, promising help securing government contracts if Trump was re-elected. The DOJ declined to press charges, citing “insufficient evidence,” and the investigation was closed.
During the interview, Vance denied the bribe accusations, calling the matter a “left-wing rabbit hole” and asserting there was no evidence of wrongdoing. Stephanopoulos ended the interview after Vance avoided directly answering whether Homan returned the money.
The exchange sparked heated reactions, with critics accusing Vance of evasion and allies accusing Stephanopoulos of bias. Trump’s feud with ABC News and Stephanopoulos dates back to his first term, including a recent defamation lawsuit involving the anchor.
Since returning to office, Trump has limited traditional media access at the White House, favoring conservative and independent journalists. Vance later criticized Stephanopoulos on X, calling the bribe story a “fake scandal” and accusing the media of focusing on “made-up Fake News.”
