The United Auto Workers (UAW) praised President Trump’s new 25-percent auto tariffs, hailing them as a necessary step to protect American jobs and manufacturing.
The tariffs aim to address the long-standing effects of free trade deals that have undermined the U.S. auto industry for over 25 years.
UAW President Shawn Fain, who supported Joe Biden in previous elections, called the move a crucial investment in the nation’s automotive sector. “Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals,” Fain said. He also emphasized the importance of securing union rights, strong labor protections, and better worker benefits like healthcare and retirement.
The UAW believes these tariffs could bring back thousands of jobs by boosting production in underutilized U.S. auto plants. With foreign automakers considering relocating production to the U.S., the tariffs may help restore good-paying, union jobs to blue-collar communities.
