House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is working to address President Donald Trump’s calls to impeach federal judges who block his policies while also aiming to limit their power without triggering politically risky removal votes.
Under pressure from the White House, Johnson has backed legislation that would restrict the impact of a district judge’s ruling, particularly injunctions. Trump and his allies have criticized judges who enforce nationwide measures that hinder his agenda, such as deportation bans or government shutdowns.
Rep. Darrell Issa’s “No Rogue Rulings Act,” which Johnson supports, seeks to prevent federal judges from issuing nationwide injunctions. While Trump’s administration has previously bypassed court rulings, speculation grows that he might eventually defy them. Meanwhile, some Republicans, including Reps. Andrew Clyde and Andy Ogles, have pushed to impeach judges, like James Boasberg, who blocked Trump’s deportation policies. Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan and Whip Steve Scalise also back the bill.
