Justice Dept. Seeks To Boot Judge Off Case After Ruling Against Trump

The Justice Department has accused U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell of showing “hostility” toward President Trump and has called for her recusal from a case involving his attempts to penalize a Democrat-linked law firm, Perkins Coie, over its involvement in the Steele dossier.

Deputy Associate Attorney General Richard Lawson pointed to Howell’s previous comments, including remarks suggesting Trump might lead the country toward authoritarianism, and her criticisms of his January 6 pardons.

Howell is also noted for prior rulings in cases involving Trump, which the DOJ claims raised concerns about impartiality. The case centers on an executive order Trump issued to prevent Perkins Coie from conducting business with federal contractors, citing its role in the dossier. Howell issued a temporary restraining order, suggesting the order might violate constitutional rights.

The DOJ’s move follows a similar petition to disqualify Chief Judge James Boasberg over rulings affecting Trump’s executive authority.
