President Donald Trump announced plans to visit Fort Knox, Kentucky, to verify the presence of the nation’s gold reserves stored at the U.S. Bullion Depository.
In a video posted to social media, Trump stated, “We’re gonna go into Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there.” This would be the first such inspection since President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited in 1943.
The U.S. Mint reports that Fort Knox holds 147.3 million ounces of gold, valued at around $435 billion. Trump expressed concern about the gold’s whereabouts, emphasizing that if it wasn’t there, he would be “very upset.”
The Fort Knox depository, built in 1936, is one of the world’s most secure facilities, and the gold is inspected only during scheduled audits. The last public inspection occurred in 2017 with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
