Whether Trump can actually serve third term as president after he claims there’s a ‘loophole’

Donald Trump has suggested that there may be a “loophole” allowing him to run for a third term as president in 2028, despite the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms.

Trump discussed the possibility with NBC’s Kristen Welker, stating he’s “not joking” about the idea, though he didn’t reveal specific details about how he’d circumvent the law.

He mentioned potential methods, including one where Vice President JD Vance could appoint Trump as VP, then resign, allowing Trump to assume the presidency. Although Trump focused on his current term, he acknowledged that many people want him to run again. He emphasized it’s “too early” to decide, but reiterated his commitment to working.

A proposed amendment to the Constitution to allow a third term was also discussed but is unlikely to pass due to the high requirements for constitutional changes.
