President Donald Trump announced on Friday he would accept King Charles’ offer for the U.S. to join the British Commonwealth, strengthening ties between the U.S. and the UK.
“I love King Charles. Sounds good to me!” Trump posted on Truth Social, responding to a report that the King had extended an invitation for the U.S. to become an ‘associate member’ of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth, made up of 56 nations formerly part of the British Empire, connects countries through shared history, language, and culture. King Charles III serves as its head.
This move is seen as a significant boost to the U.S.-UK relationship. Trump and the King have maintained a strong relationship, often exchanging letters.
The British hope that during Trump’s state visit to the UK later this year, King Charles will personally make the case for full membership, emphasizing the Commonwealth as a platform for global cooperation and peacemaking.
