A significant number of Democrats voted against a continuing resolution to prevent a partial government shutdown this past week, as highlighted by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Speaking on Life, Liberty, & Levin, Johnson criticized Democrats for their votes on the stopgap bill, calling it “raw partisan politics” and accusing them of using the American people as pawns.
Only Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) voted for the resolution in the House, while Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Angus King (I-ME) voted in favor in the Senate.
Johnson thanked Republicans for largely staying unified and credited President Donald Trump for rallying support. While some Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), expressed concerns about continued funding, Johnson defended the resolution as fiscally responsible, claiming it reduces spending for the first time in the modern era.
