Rare virus that kille Gene Hackman’s wife kills further three in US

The rare disease that claimed Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, is back in the spotlight.

Betsy, who died from hantavirus, and Gene, who passed away from dementia and heart disease, were found dead in their New Mexico home in February.

Now, the disease has resurfaced in Mammoth Lakes, California, claiming three more lives since February. Health officials are alarmed by the increase in cases, which all ended fatally. The virus is transmitted through infected deer mice or their droppings. While hantavirus is rare, it’s spreading in areas with higher deer mouse populations, leading to growing concerns.

To prevent infection, it’s crucial to avoid exposure to rodents and their droppings in homes, workplaces, and vehicles.
