The Trump administration plans to fine illegal immigrants $998 per day if they fail to leave the U.S. after receiving a deportation order.
The policy, based on a 1996 law revived during Trump’s first term, could apply retroactively for up to five years, potentially resulting in fines over $1 million.
A flyer distributed by DHS outlines the benefits of self-deporting through the CBP Home app, including the ability to choose a departure flight and retain earned money. Those who don’t comply face arrest, additional fines, or even jail time.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has also ramped up enforcement, recently leading a pre-dawn raid in Phoenix where three criminal illegal immigrants were apprehended. The administration says these efforts aim to restore law and order while expanding interagency cooperation.
