Trump sparks major debate after White House says he wants to deport ‘violent’ US criminals to notorious prison

President Donald Trump has reportedly floated the idea of deporting violent U.S. citizens to El Salvador’s mega-prison, Cecot, known for its harsh conditions and alleged human rights abuses.

At a White House press briefing on April 8, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the president had discussed the idea publicly and privately.

The plan, part of Trump’s broader promise to launch the largest deportation campaign in U.S. history, would initially target migrants accused of crimes. However, Trump has expressed interest in finding legal pathways to include violent American offenders.

Leavitt noted that the idea is still under review and may face legal challenges.

The controversial proposal has sparked fierce debate online, with supporters citing prison overcrowding, while critics warn it could violate constitutional rights and set a dangerous precedent.
