The U.S. Senate rejected three resolutions from Senator Bernie Sanders that aimed to block a $20 billion weapons sale to Israel.
Sanders introduced the bills nearly a year after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
He cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 43,000 people have reportedly died due to Israel’s military campaign. U.N. officials warn of famine, with over 2 million Palestinians facing extreme hunger.
Despite strong backing for Israel in the Senate, Sanders condemned the U.S.’s role, saying it enables war crimes. He accused the Biden administration of violating U.S. law by supporting a country accused of human rights abuses.
The bills failed, but highlighted Democratic division over U.S. policy on the war.
