White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that Americans would likely be “quite interested” in hearing the audio recording of former President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur.
The 2023 interview was part of an investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents. While Hur found Biden had willfully retained materials, he declined to press charges, citing Biden’s age and memory issues.
Despite public interest, the Department of Justice has blocked both Congress and the media from accessing the tapes, citing executive privilege. House Republicans and several media outlets, including CNN and Reuters, have pushed for their release.
In July 2024, the House rejected a resolution to fine Attorney General Merrick Garland $10,000 per day for withholding the tapes, although Garland had already been held in contempt the previous month.
