Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, was relieved of duty after making comments distancing the base from Vice President J.D. Vance and the Trump administration.
In an internal email following Vance’s March visit, Meyers said his views did not reflect those of the base.
The email, sent to all staff—including Danish and Greenlandic personnel—prompted her removal for “loss of confidence” and failure to maintain political neutrality. Col. Shawn Lee has replaced her.
Pentagon and political figures supported her dismissal, emphasizing the importance of nonpartisanship in military leadership. The incident comes amid renewed U.S. interest in Greenland’s strategic value, with officials like Trump and Rubio citing its mineral wealth and role in Arctic security against potential Chinese influence.
