Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been ordered to pay over $54,000 in attorney fees for violating Georgia’s Open Records Act.
The penalty stems from her office’s failure to provide documents requested by defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who represents Michael Roman, a co-defendant in the Georgia election interference case alongside Donald Trump.
A judge found Willis’ office acted in bad faith, being “openly hostile” to the requests. Willis must release the records within 30 days. This follows her December 2024 disqualification from the case due to an “appearance of impropriety” over a past relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Willis has appealed the disqualification, arguing no actual conflict existed. The ruling adds to mounting legal troubles, including another open records case tied to the same investigation.
