House Speaker Mike Johnson and GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk are clashing over the direction of the renewed investigation into the January 6 Capitol attack.
Johnson wants a narrower probe focused on reviewing the previous January 6 committee’s work and avoiding further action against figures like former Rep. Liz Cheney. In contrast, Loudermilk and others favor a broader scope, including deeper inquiries into security failures.
Loudermilk, appointed to lead the new subcommittee, insists on full autonomy and transparency, but internal disagreements have stalled progress. He’s criticized the former committee, led by Cheney and Adam Schiff, for focusing too heavily on Donald Trump.
Johnson has pledged full funding for the new committee, though its structure and membership are still being decided. Meanwhile, House Republicans have revived other controversial investigations, including those involving President Biden and his son Hunter.
Separately, Sen. Adam Schiff raised concerns about accepting a pardon from President Biden for those involved in the January 6 investigation, warning it might imply guilt. Liz Cheney and Dr. Anthony Fauci were among those pardoned, though legal experts say it doesn’t exempt them from testifying if subpoenaed.
