Bill Passed in US House to Tighten Voter ID Rules
By Callum Jones
A bill that could significantly reshape U.S. elections passed the House on Thursday, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act” (SAVE Act) passed 220-208 and would require voters to show official proof of U.S. citizenship when registering for federal elections. Accepted IDs include passports, REAL ID-compliant documents, and military IDs.
Trump’s executive order argues the U.S. lags behind other countries like India and Brazil in election security, citing loose verification of citizenship.
The bill also mandates state-federal cooperation to update and monitor voter rolls.
Critics, mainly Democrats, say the law could suppress voters, especially low-income Americans who may lack required documents. Supporters argue it’s a necessary step to prevent election fraud.
Trump said the order aims to “end election fraud.”
