The Senate confirmed retired Lt. Gen. Dan Caine as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a 60–25 vote early Friday. The confirmation followed a delay led by Sen.
Elizabeth Warren, who protested President Trump’s dismissal of former chairman Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr.
Despite concerns, Caine’s confirmation hearing was smooth, earning bipartisan support. The Senate Armed Services Committee advanced his nomination with a 23–4 vote. Sen. Roger Wicker emphasized the urgency of filling the position amid rising threats from China and global rivals.
Trump nominated Caine after removing several senior officials, including Brown and Adm. Lisa Franchetti. Critics argue these firings reflect efforts to politicize the military.
Caine, praised for his experience and leadership, was previously passed over during the Biden administration. A final decision on more appointments is expected soon.
