Sen. Adam Schiff and Rep. Nancy Pelosi are criticizing President Donald Trump after he pardoned over 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants, many of whom were convicted of misdemeanors like trespassing.
Schiff, speaking on MSNBC, called the move “obscene,” claiming it included violent offenders and even a Proud Boys leader. He said Trump’s actions were a “grotesque display” of presidential power.
Pelosi echoed the outrage on X, calling the pardons “an insult to our justice system” and a betrayal of the law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol. She accused Trump of prioritizing loyalty to rioters over justice.
Critics noted the irony, pointing out previous sweeping pardons under President Biden, including for his family and key allies, which received less backlash from Schiff and Pelosi.
