President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and mandating that all federal election ballots be reviewed by Election Day.
The order directs updates to the federal voter registration form and conditions federal funding on state compliance.
Critics, including the Brennan Center, argue it would suppress votes and exceed presidential authority. The order echoes the goals of the Republican-backed SAVE Act, which Democrats oppose. Trump emphasized the importance of election integrity, citing past enforcement failures.
Additionally, his administration plans to launch the “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and potentially replace the IRS. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, tied to Trump’s broader trade agenda.
Trump stated that this agency would ensure foreign entities pay their fair share, aiming to lower domestic taxes and eventually eliminate the IRS.
