Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faced criticism from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after he voted with Republicans to advance a government funding bill, avoiding a shutdown.
Speaking in San Francisco, Pelosi said she believed Schumer could still lead Senate Democrats but accused him of compromising too easily. She argued Democrats might have forced Republicans to negotiate by proposing a temporary extension instead.
Pelosi said Schumer gave up leverage, adding, “I don’t give away anything for nothing.” She urged Democrats to oppose the GOP-crafted bill, calling it a false choice between a shutdown or a “blank check.”
Meanwhile, promotional events for Schumer’s new book were canceled due to security concerns. His decision also drew backlash from other Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Van Jones, who claimed Schumer had “radically misread the room” and compared him unfavorably to Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell.
