Senate Republicans have set an ambitious timeline to advance President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda during a three-week work period that began Monday.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that he hopes to finalize a compromise budget resolution with the House by April 11, a key step toward enacting Trump’s tax and spending priorities.
The push follows public pressure from House GOP leaders urging the Senate to move faster. The House has already passed a budget resolution and called on the Senate to adopt it quickly. Senate Republicans plan to revise the resolution to allow for a permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which are set to expire in 2026.
The GOP’s budget blueprint also includes increased funding for ICE, higher defense spending, and tax relief measures like eliminating taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits—key elements of Trump’s 2024 campaign platform.
