Former CNN analyst Chris Cillizza said Friday that despite potential economic fallout from President Donald Trump’s new global tariffs, Democrats face long odds in retaking the Senate in 2026.
Markets fell following Trump’s tariff announcement, prompting speculation about whether backlash could boost Democrats.
Cillizza noted Democrats need to gain four seats, since JD Vance will serve as vice president and break Senate ties. However, of the 22 GOP-held seats up in 2026, 21 are in states Trump won. Only Maine, held by Sen. Susan Collins, offers a clear Democratic opportunity.
He identified North Carolina as a potential pickup, especially if Roy Cooper runs, but said paths beyond that are difficult. Even if Democrats win in Maine, North Carolina, and possibly Ohio or Iowa, they still face an uphill climb—especially with key retirements weakening their chances.
