In her first public address since her husband’s second term began, First Lady Melania Trump championed the Take It Down Act, a proposed bill aimed at protecting young people from online exploitation and abuse.
Speaking on Capitol Hill, she stressed the urgency of combating non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), particularly AI-generated deepfakes. Melania highlighted the case of 15-year-old Elliston Berry, who became a victim of deepfake pornography. She urged bipartisan support for the bill, which aims to hold social media platforms accountable for hosting explicit, manipulated content. If passed, the legislation would criminalize the publication of non-consensual intimate images and require platforms to remove such content within 48 hours. The bill, backed by over 100 organizations, has raised concerns over potential government overreach from some civil liberties groups.
