China halts exports of critical rare material as Trump tariff war intensifies

China Halts Rare Earth Exports Amid Tariff War with U.S.

China has reportedly stopped shipments of key rare earth elements following new export restrictions issued on April 4, in retaliation to Donald Trump’s escalating tariffs—now totaling 145% on Chinese goods.

The restrictions affect seven rare earths vital to industries like defense and electronics, of which China controls about 90% of global supply. Exporters must now apply for licenses, with approval potentially taking up to two months.

Experts warn the move could disrupt supply chains, raise prices, and push countries like the U.S.—which only has one rare earth mine—to diversify and reshore production.
