Former CNN Contributor Rains On Democrats’ 2026 Senate Chances

Chris Cillizza: Democrats Face Uphill Battle for Senate in 2026

Former CNN analyst Chris Cillizza said Friday that despite potential economic fallout from Trump’s new global tariffs, Democrats still face major obstacles in retaking the Senate in 2026. They need to flip four seats for a majority, but 21 of the 22 GOP-held seats up for election are in states Trump won.

He noted that Maine and North Carolina offer real opportunities—especially if Democrat Roy Cooper runs—but other key races like Georgia and Michigan must be defended. Beyond that, options are limited. Cillizza mentioned Iowa and Florida as possible pickups, but the map overall favors Republicans.

Recent retirements by Democratic Senators Shaheen (NH), Peters (MI), and Smith (MN) further complicate their path. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer could face a primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after cooperating with Republicans on a spending bill.
