First Lady Melania Trump postponed the White House spring garden tours by one day due to anti-Elon Musk protests planned on the National Mall. Her office cited safety concerns as the reason for the schedule change.
Though she did not attend the tours, Melania appeared at a State Department event the same day. The “Hands Off!” rallies, organized in opposition to President Trump and DOGE Director Elon Musk, drew large crowds in Washington, D.C.
The protests also sparked controversy after several Democratic lawmakers made inflammatory and xenophobic remarks about both Melania and Musk. Critics targeted Musk’s South African heritage and questioned Melania’s citizenship status, despite her having become a U.S. citizen in 2006.
The backlash has added to ongoing political tensions surrounding the Trump administration’s tech and immigration policies.
