First 2028 Presidential Contender Steps Up: ‘I Have No Choice’

ESPN host Stephen A. Smith said he may consider running for president in 2028 if the Democratic Party fails to offer a strong candidate. Speaking on ABC News’ This Week, Smith revealed that elected officials and wealthy donors have encouraged him to explore a run.

“I’m not a politician,” he said, “but I’ve been approached about exploratory committees.” Smith, known for his bold sports commentary, has increasingly voiced political opinions, often criticizing both parties.

While Smith prefers a more qualified candidate steps up, he said he’d consider running if necessary. He voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 but later called her nomination process flawed.

Smith also criticized President Trump’s tariff policies and expressed frustration with Democrats’ lack of leadership and results. The 2028 election will be the first in years without an incumbent.
