House Gives Unanimous Approval to Bill Focusing on the Needs of Veteran Survivors.

In a unanimous 424-0 vote, the U.S. House passed H.R. 1228, the “Prioritizing Veterans’ Survivors Act,” to restore the Office of Survivors Assistance (OSA) under the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

This legislation aims to strengthen advocacy for the families of fallen service members by reinstating the OSA’s original advisory role. Sponsored by Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.), the bill addresses the diminished influence of the OSA following policy changes in 2021.

Tennessee Rep. Doug Collins, now VA Secretary, praised the measure, emphasizing its importance in preserving survivor support services amid VA reforms. The act enjoys strong bipartisan support and is expected to streamline benefit access, enhance communication with survivors, and improve policy responsiveness.

Veterans’ groups and advocacy organizations lauded the bill as a critical step toward honoring military families and ensuring their needs remain a top priority. The legislation now moves to the Senate, where it is likely to receive similar bipartisan backing.
