President Donald Trump praised El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele during his U.S. state visit, highlighting Bukele’s tough stance on violent crime.
Trump specifically cited Bukele’s construction of ultra-modern prisons like CECOT, which now houses dangerous MS-13 gang members deported from the U.S.
In a Fox News interview, Trump said his administration is exploring the idea of using similar facilities for “homegrown” criminals in the U.S.
Trump also met with Bukele in the Oval Office, where tensions rose after a CNN reporter questioned El Salvador’s refusal to return gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Bukele and U.S. officials, including Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller, pushed back, saying the court had no authority to dictate foreign policy.
Trump criticized the reporter, accusing her of bias and praising efforts to keep criminals out of the country.
