Roughly a dozen House Democrats are considering a range of protest strategies for President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress on Tuesday, with some aiming to disrupt the speech itself.
While leaders encouraged members to bring guests affected by Trump’s policies, a more aggressive faction seeks to express their outrage more visibly.
Ideas for protest include lawmakers walking out during certain parts of the speech, holding up anti-Trump signs, or using props like eggs to symbolize inflation. Some Democrats are also planning to wear coordinated outfits, such as pink for the Democratic Women’s Caucus or black for the Congressional Black Caucus.
There’s disagreement among members, with some believing disruption plays into Trump’s hands, while others argue it’s a necessary show of resistance.
