China Stays Cool After Trump’s Latest Tariff Hike
By Poppy Bilderbeck
China has kept calm in response to Donald Trump’s latest tariff escalation. After the former president signed an executive order imposing tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian gave a minimal 12-word reply: “You can ask the US side for the specific tax rate figures.”
Trump’s order follows China raising its own tariffs on US goods from 84% to 125%. The executive order claims the tariffs are meant to protect US national security and support Trump’s “America First” trade agenda. While tariffs on other countries are on hold amid trade talks, China remains the key target.
The White House says the move closes loopholes, raises steel and aluminum tariffs, and aims to ensure fair trade and protect American innovation.
