Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) during a town hall, calling for new Democratic leadership. Ivey expressed frustration over Schumer’s support for a GOP-backed continuing resolution that maintained government funding at Biden-era levels.
He condemned Schumer’s cooperation, especially after Donald Trump thanked Schumer publicly. Ivey argued Democrats should oppose Trump and Republicans under any circumstance.
He praised House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for voting against the bill, contrasting Jeffries’ leadership with Schumer’s. Despite respecting Schumer’s long career, Ivey suggested it’s time for Senate Democrats to choose a new direction.
Schumer defended his vote on media outlets, stating a shutdown would have enabled right-wing plans to slash federal functions and weaken the courts—tools Democrats rely on to resist Trump’s agenda, including policies tied to Project 2025.
