Two House Democrats, Reps. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), are seeking to organize a congressional delegation to visit a high-security prison in El Salvador, Axios reports. The prison, CECOT, is where deportees—including suspected MS-13 members—have been sent under Trump-era immigration policies.
Dozens of Democrats have shown interest in joining the trip, intended as a statement against the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national detained at CECOT. Though some reports claimed the Supreme Court ordered his return to the U.S., the Court only directed officials to facilitate it.
Garcia and Frost requested authorization from Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), as official delegations require approval.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) also plans to travel to El Salvador, seeking a meeting with President Nayib Bukele to discuss Abrego Garcia’s case.
