Never Plug Space Heaters Into Power Strips, Firefighters Warn
As temperatures drop across the northern hemisphere, many people rely on space heaters to stay warm. But firefighters urge caution: never plug a space heater into a power strip. These strips aren’t built to handle the high current heaters require, and can overheat or catch fire.
Why It’s Dangerous:
Space heaters can reach 600°F. Plugging them into a power strip has caused fires, including one that destroyed a home in Ohio when a heater ignited a couch.
Safety Tips:
-
Always plug heaters directly into wall outlets
-
Keep at least 3 feet of space around them
-
Never leave them unattended or running while sleeping
-
Use on flat, stable surfaces—never on furniture or carpet
Preventing Electrical Fires:
-
Unplug heat-producing devices when not in use
-
Use extension cords only temporarily
-
Keep the third prong for safety
-
Upgrade old electrical systems
-
Never use damaged cords
Stay warm—and safe—this winter.
