Massachusetts State Representative Christopher Flanagan, a Democrat, was arrested and charged with five counts of wire fraud and one count of falsifying records.
Prosecutors allege he stole $36,000 from a Cape Cod Home Builders Association, where he also worked, using the money for personal and political expenses—including psychic services.
Despite earning over $180,000 from both jobs, Flanagan reportedly faced serious financial issues. U.S. Attorney Leah Foley called his actions a “breach of public trust,” accusing him of using fake identities to cover up the fraud.
He pleaded not guilty in federal court and was released. Authorities, including the IRS and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, condemned his conduct.
Each charge carries up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines, if convicted. The investigation is ongoing.
