Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) warned foreign leaders enabling authoritarianism by aligning with President Trump, stating Democrats won’t “look kindly” on them once back in power.
On Pod Save America, Raskin specifically named El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who recently met with Trump and declined to return MS-13 suspect Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Raskin criticized Bukele’s cooperation with Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport suspected gang members to El Salvador’s megaprison. He called for cutting U.S. aid to El Salvador and holding its government accountable.
Raskin also expressed concern about the Trump administration’s alleged abuse of power and said Democrats must pursue “transnational solidarity” to counter rising authoritarianism. He warned that under Trump, the U.S. is sliding into “gangster state” conditions and must act to prevent full dictatorship.
