Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett faced backlash after comparing former President Donald Trump to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member deported to El Salvador.
In an MSNBC interview, Crockett said Abrego Garcia was “a lot less criminal” than Trump, pointing out that Trump has criminal convictions while Abrego does not.
Critics slammed her remarks, calling them extreme and accusing her of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Veteran Democratic strategist Mo Elleithee cautioned against portraying Abrego Garcia as a martyr, urging Democrats to instead focus on civil rights issues and Trump’s impact on democracy.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen also drew criticism for meeting with Abrego in El Salvador, as the Trump administration insists he’s a confirmed MS-13 member.
