Four House Democrats traveled to El Salvador to demand the release of Kilmar Ábrego García, a Maryland resident deported despite a federal court order.
Denied access to him, they called for daily proof of life, legal counsel, and his immediate return. Rep. Yassamin Ansari and others sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio pressing these demands.
The Supreme Court ordered the U.S. to “facilitate” Ábrego García’s return but didn’t compel the Trump administration to act. Sen. Chris Van Hollen briefly met Ábrego García, who had been held at a notorious prison, raising concerns about his treatment.
Critics accuse the lawmakers of ignoring domestic issues, while U.S. officials say they’re removing legal barriers but can’t force El Salvador to return him. He’s accused of human trafficking after a 2022 traffic stop.
